Fota Wildlife Park

PDF Print E-mail
fotalogo.gifFOTA Wildlife Park is not like an ordinary zoo. Animals that thrive in a free-range environment have been chosen, which allows them to roam free, while mixed with other species and with human visitors!

The species living at Fota have adjusted to the Irish Climate and make their own choice when to roam and when to seek shelter. In some cases, for example the giraffes, only a single fence separates visitors from the animals but this is always unobtrusive and does not reduce the animals' quality of life.

Other animals roam free throughout the park, and along the pathways that lead through the landscaped gardens. On our last visit we were eating our picnic, on the lawns beside a lake and the main cafe, when a group of kangaroos bounded through waking a huge albatross that had been idly dozing right next to us, and casing the flock of flamingos to peer in unison towards the commotion.

Kids love it, but it is a liberating and refreshing treat for everyone to be so close to so many animals that are obviously enjoying themselves. Fota is a full day out for all the family. It is a large park so you should expect to walk quite a long way ( there is a wildlife train for those with less energy) the kids will wear themselves out, and it'll be early to bed for everyone.

Fota is just off the N25 main road between Midleton and Cork. Its just 25 minutes from Youghal, 45 minutes from Dungarvan and 5 minutes from Cobh.
